Understanding PCOD and PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome is one of the most common hormonal conditions affecting women of reproductive age, and one of the most commonly mismanaged. It typically shows itself through irregular or absent periods, acne, excess facial or body hair, weight that is difficult to shift, and difficulty conceiving.

PCOS is not only a reproductive condition. It carries a raised long-term risk of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and fatty liver, which is why we screen for these from the outset. Managed properly, most women with PCOS have regular cycles, conceive when they wish to, and keep those long-term risks low.

Our Approach to PCOS Care

Care is planned around what matters most to you right now, whether that is regular cycles, skin and hair concerns, or conceiving.

  • Accurate diagnosis - clinical assessment, hormonal profile and pelvic ultrasound, with other causes of irregular cycles excluded first.
  • Metabolic screening - fasting glucose and insulin, lipid profile, blood pressure and liver assessment, repeated periodically.
  • Nutrition and activity planning - realistic, sustainable changes; even a modest reduction in weight often restores ovulation.
  • Cycle regulation - hormonal treatment where appropriate, which also protects the lining of the uterus over the long term.
  • Insulin sensitising medication - such as metformin, where insulin resistance is confirmed.
  • Managing acne and unwanted hair - medical treatment with realistic timelines, since visible change takes several months.
  • Fertility treatment - ovulation induction and, where needed, referral for assisted reproduction.
  • Emotional support - PCOS affects mood and self-image, and that deserves attention alongside the physical treatment.

PCOS is managed, not cured. Symptoms return if treatment and lifestyle changes stop, so we build a plan you can realistically sustain and review it with you regularly.
