Why Preparation Matters
A baby's major organs, including the neural tube that becomes the brain and spine, form in the first few weeks after conception, often before a woman knows she is pregnant. That is why the preparation that matters most happens before conception rather than after the pregnancy test.
A pre conception consultation is short and practical. We review your general health, medicines, vaccinations and nutrition, correct anything that needs correcting, and start folic acid. For women with diabetes, thyroid disorders, epilepsy, high blood pressure or a previous complicated pregnancy, this visit is particularly valuable.
What We Cover
Ideally we see you around three months before you plan to conceive, and both partners are welcome.
- Folic acid - started before conception, at the dose appropriate for you, to reduce the risk of neural tube defects.
- Reviewing existing medication - some medicines need changing to a pregnancy-safe alternative well before you conceive.
- Controlling chronic conditions - diabetes, thyroid disorders, high blood pressure and epilepsy stabilised in advance.
- Vaccination check - rubella immunity and other vaccines completed before pregnancy.
- Nutrition and weight - correcting anaemia and vitamin D deficiency, and reaching a healthy weight range.
- Genetic and carrier screening - particularly with a family history of inherited conditions or in a related marriage.
- Lifestyle advice - tobacco, alcohol, sleep and stress, for both partners.
- Understanding your fertile window - simple, accurate guidance on timing, and when to seek help if conception takes longer than expected.
If you are already taking regular medication for any condition, please bring the packets or a current prescription with you so we can review them precisely.
